Saturday was the maiden voyage for J/70 No Quarter #781 at Fishing Bay Yacht Club for the Opening Day Regatta.  After being launched and splashed with Coors Light the boat was rigged, sails raised and we headed out to join the 4 other J/70s and 26 total boats taking part in the Opening Day middle distance race finishing 4th among the J/70s.

The boat worked great – the crew performed admirably – one thing was clear – this skipper needs more time at the helm.  I’m looking forward to many more J/70 races!

Another beautiful Friday night for some J/70 sailing at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.  This evening I was sailing with Steve Quiriconi on his new boat Hotty Toddy along with Jerry Latell.  Steve and Jerry had been out earlier in the afternoon to get everything setup and tuned and so the three of us got out to the race course a little early to practice some maneuvers.

In the 4 races tonight we did pretty well.  The very short line made for very tight and late starts, but the shifty winds meant anyone could catch a shift up the beats.  We did well to keep up with the leaders and got through our maneuvers pretty well without any major goofs.  We even did some gybe sets and a Mexican take down at one point.

The final race was 2 laps and then the trip up the channel back to the dock.  We were the first boat to legally complete the course and a nice way to end the night and the first time out for the boat.

The forecast for today was for better wind and we got it. Out on the course in the same racing area, just north of the Newport Bridge, we started out with 8 knots out of the south and by the last race we had 12-13.

In the 4 races we had some decent starts and seemed to get a little faster and had better boat work as the day went on. While we didn’t have any great results to show for it – it was fun sailing in the J/70 fleet. And being my first time in Newport it was nice to see the town and New York Yacht Club. Thanks Noel Clinard for having me along for the weekend – it was a pleasure sailing with you, Jerry and Carrie.
