Fishing Bay Yacht Club
It was a cool, light air day for the 3rd installment of the Fall Series for the Offshore Division at Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Without many J/70s on the line and both my boat and Double Eagle short on crew – Andrew and I jumped on Double Eagle and I got to drive the day. All in all it was a fun day and we finished 2nd in both races. Thanks again to the Double Eagle crew for having me along!
In October I once again played event chairman for FBYC’s Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship – this the 34th running of this event and there’s only one more year I won’t be old enough to sail in it. As always we had a great group of sailors number 45 in total. Saturday was a bit light allowing us to get in one race before the wind shut off and then didn’t settle down. Dinner by Alain Vincey was fabulous as well. On Sunday the wind held in better allowing us to do 4 more races. Congratulations to Mike Hecky winning this one for his first time – well sailed!
This years photos were probably the best I’ve ever gotten. The sun was just right and my boat driver Mike Russom knew just where to put me to get the good angles.
Today was quite a breezy day for the 2nd Offshore Fall Series day at Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Rather than get beat up in the cold and wet conditions most of the J/70s decided to bail and crew on bigger boats. I ended up on Mad Hatter.
We sailed two races with winds in the low 20’s that eventually eased off a little bit in the 2nd race. I was mostly in the back of the boat helping trim genoa.
It was a breezy day with light clouds for FBYC‘s first day of the Fall Series. Having not spent a lot of time sailing No Quarter in winds in the upper teens gusting into the low 20’s we certainly had our hands full. Upwind in the first race we found our groove and worked the boat well. Downwind we sailed conservatively and kept the boat in control.
By the 2nd race several boats dropped out and we led the first lap and a half before Full Monty passed just downwind just before the finish.
We had our final night of the J/70 Friday Night Series at FBYC. The wind was light and the sunlight shorter. Made for one of the prettiest nights I was out.
This year the Smith Point race was a bit of a slog with a 15-20 knot north wind. I sailed on Mad Hatter and this year we didn’t make it to Smith Point light house until around 9:30. But the spinnaker run all the way down the bay back to the Piankatank was quite nice. Arriving at nearly 1am we were one of the last to finish, but still corrected over everyone else out there who sailed the long course. Thanks again to Bob, Lisa and crew for having me along!
Another beautiful night of J/70 racing at Fishing Bay Yacht Club. It was a bit light – but still fun to be out on the water.
We had a windy start for the first day of racing at the Fishing Bay Yacht Club 76th Annual One Design Regatta. Two lasers were unfortunately involved in a collision before the first race that left one boat severely holed and not sea worthy. A broken mast and traveler on other boats rounded out the rest of the carnage.
The second day was much lighter. We hadn’t sailed on the same course as Flying Scots in a while and with 16 of them on the course – it was important to find clear air. In the end I finished 2nd to Charlie Brewer who sailed a great regatta and found a way to win the last race to take the regatta.
No racing for me tonight as I was preparing to sail in the 76th Annual One Design Regatta – but I did get out and do some RC on what was a rather windy and entertaining night.
